It involves consuming protein-rich foods or supplements at specific times to optimise their utilisation by the body. According to Delhi-based dietician Priya Bansal, MSc Nutrition, "The idea behind protein timing is to take advantage of certain windows of opportunity when the body is more receptive to protein and can utilise it efficiently."

How Much Protein Should You Consume?

The optimal protein intake varies depending on factors such as age, weight, gender, and activity level. Bansal stated that the general guideline for individuals engaging in regular exercise or resistance training is to consume around 0.8-1 gram of protein per kg of body weight. This means that a person weighing 70 kg should aim for 120-150 grams of protein per day.

Increasing Protein Efficiency With Distribution

To make the most of protein intake, it's important to distribute it effectively throughout the day.

1) Pre-Workout Protein

Consuming protein before a workout can provide the body with essential amino acids needed for energy production and muscle protein synthesis during exercise. Bansal advised that have a protein-rich meal or snack 1-2 hours before your workout. This can be a combination of lean meats, fish, poultry, eggs, or plant-based protein sources like beans, lentils, and tofu.

2) Post-Workout Protein

The post-workout period is considered a critical time for protein consumption. Bansal advocated that consuming protein within 1-2 hours after exercise helps maximise muscle protein synthesis, repair muscle tissue, and promote muscle growth. 

3) Spread Protein Throughout The Day

Bansal emphasised that rather than consuming a large portion of your daily protein intake in one meal, aim to spread it evenly throughout the day. This ensures a constant supply of amino acids for muscle repair and growth. 

4) Bedtime Protein

Consuming protein before bed can be beneficial for overnight recovery and muscle growth. Bansal advised choosing slow-digesting protein sources since they help maintain a continuous flow of amino acids throughout the night, aiding muscle recovery.

Protein timing can have significant effects on weight loss including:

Increased Satiety

Protein is highly satiating, meaning it keeps you feeling full for longer. "By consuming protein-rich foods or supplements with meals and snacks, you can increase feelings of satiety and reduce overall calorie intake," Bansal advised. This can be particularly helpful in curbing cravings, preventing overeating, and promoting weight loss.

Thermic Effect of Food (TEF)

Compared to carbohydrates and fats, protein has a greater thermic effect. This means that the body expends more energy to digest, absorb, and metabolise protein. Bansal highlighted that by incorporating protein into meals and snacks throughout the day, you can maximise the thermic effect of food and increase your overall calorie expenditure.

Muscle Preservation

During weight loss, there is a risk of losing not just fat but also muscle mass. "Protein consumption at regular intervals, particularly before and after workouts, aids in the preservation of lean muscle tissue," said Bansal. This is crucial for maintaining a higher metabolic rate, as muscles burn more calories at rest compared to fat.

Protein timing is equally important for individuals looking to build muscle mass and increase strength. Here's how it can support muscle gain:

1) Muscle Protein Synthesis (MPS)

The body creates and repairs muscle tissue through a process called MPS. To maximise MPS, Bansal added, "consuming an adequate amount of protein within the post-workout window (around 1-2 hours after exercise) is crucial."
