Parkinson’s Disease

Posted in Human body by admin on the May 22nd, 2009

Parkinson’s disease is a chronic progressive disease that occurs when a group of cells in the substantia nigra of the brain malfunction and die. This results in a substantial loss of a neurotransmitter called Dopamine. Dopamine transports the signals to the part of the brain that controls movement, coordination and initiation of action.

Incidence of Parkinson’s Disease?
It is estimated 6.3 million people have the disease world-wide. Around one and a half million Americans have Parkinson’s. 1 in 10 people with Parkinson’s are diagnosed before the age of 50 years. 15% before the age of 40 years. Slightly more men than women have Parkinson’s disease.

Dehydration Slows Metabolism

Posted in Human body by admin on the May 17th, 2009

In today’s society, it seems that everybody is trying to lose weight. Whether they know it or not, their main goal to long-term weight management is raising their metabolism (rate in which your body uses energy). What most people fail to realize is that their hydration level directly affects their metabolism.

H2O is involved with almost every biological function in the human body, so it only makes sense that your body’s metabolism would slow down in a dehydrated state.

Joint Health

Posted in Human body by admin on the May 7th, 2009

According to The Journal of Arthritis and Rheumatism, one out of every five Americans are afflicted with joint problems. No matter if you are a runner, weightlifter, or just a homebody, joint problems will most likely affect you at some point in your life. The good news is that there is a nutritional solution, Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate.

Glucosamine is your number one priority for joint health. This amino sugar is very important for the formation of bones, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and synovial (joint) fluid. Glucosamine supplementation has been proven to actually build joint cartilage in over 300 studies and 20 clinical trials.

Human Growth Hormone (Somatropin)

Posted in Human body by admin on the March 30th, 2009

Human Growth Hormone (HGH), also called somatropin, is produced in the anterior of the pituitary gland deep inside the brain, where it is one of the most abundant hormones secreted. It influences the growth of cells, bones, muscles and organs throughout the body.

Production of HGH peaks at adolescence when accelerated growth occurs. If growing children have too little they remain as dwarfs, while if they have too much they become giants. Ample in our youth, production of HGH falls 80% from age 21 to 61. Daily growth hormone secretion diminishes with age to the extent that a 60 year old may secrete only 25% of the HGH secreted by a 20 year old.

Lower Back Pain and Sciatica

Posted in Human body by admin on the March 28th, 2009

Sciatica is the most common ailment experienced by people during the course of their lives. If the pain is persistent, it can hinder movement, cause stress, and be responsible for a lack of desire to pursue day-to-day activities. It can even be responsible for reduced social interaction.

The cause of sciatica is very often a lumbar disc prolapse or what is more commonly known as a hernia or disc herniation. It is more likely to occur between the ages of 30 – 50 after heavy lifting or falls.
The degeneration of the spine that occurs during the aging process is the primary cause of low back pain although actions such as prolonged standing or sitting at a desk can overextend the low back muscles and damage the lumbar disc.

Chron’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis

Posted in Human body by admin on the March 18th, 2009

Irritable bowel syndrome is known as IBS. While most cases of IBS are treated with medication and reducing stress levels in lifestyle, others are more serious. These are Chron’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

The average colon is 27 feet long. It helps absorb nutrients while removing waste from the system. Ulcerative colitis is more common than Chron’s. It is confined to the large bowel while Chron’s includes both large and small intestine.

It begins with sores, also called ulcers, that form in the wall of the bowel. As they become irritated due to stress, diet, heredity, or unknown factors, they will cause the bowel wall to become inflamed.

Blood in the Urine (Hematuria)

Posted in Human body by admin on the March 11th, 2009

Blood in the urine, or hematuria, is a fairly common event with about 10% of people experiencing it. Blood in the urine can be visible to the naked eye as bright red or brown in color, or can be present microscopically. The presence of blood means that bleeding is occurring somewhere in the genito-urinary tract; that is in the kidneys, ureters, the prostate gland, the bladder or the urethra.

Hematuria may be a sign of a serious medical disorder which requires medical investigation. The amount of blood loss is not necessarily an indication of the seriousness of the disorder. When blood is mixed with urine it is sometimes difficult to judge the gross loss.

Ever had back pain? Most of us will answer yes. The pain can be anywhere from a dull ache to one which causes permanent loss of work.

What Are The Causes?

Majority of low back pain is caused by strains on the muscles and ligament in the back. Other more serious are due to a protruding disc or very rarely a tumor or infection.
