The first trimester or initial three months or 12 weeks of pregnancy are crucial. The pregnant woman goes through a lot of physical, hormonal and psychological changes that impacts her health and well-being. During the first trimester, pregnant women have to be very careful of what they eat and do as it can cause a direct impact on their foetus. Negligence can double up the risk which is why doctors advise to be vigilant particularly during the initial months of pregnancy. While most women know about Dos and Don'ts during pregnancy in general, we reached out to Dr Tejal Deshmukh, Consultant- Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Manipal Hospitals , Baner - Pune to know about what to avoid during the first trimester.

5 Things To Avoid During First Trimester

Here are five things that are a complete NO for pregnant women in their first trimester.

Alcohol

It's advisable to completely abstain from alcohol during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester when the baby's organs are forming. Alcohol can have harmful effects on foetal development and increase the risk of birth defects. Pregnant women should stop alcohol consumption as soon as they find out about their pregnancy to ward off potential health risks.

Additionally, couples who are planning a pregnancy should avoid alcohol as it increases the chances of conception.

Smoking

Just like alcohol, smoking during pregnancy is also associated with a higher risk of complications, such as preterm birth and low birth weight. This can be detrimental for both mother and child. Dr Deshmukh suggests avoiding smoking and staying  away from environments where you may be exposed to passive smoking.

Certain Medications

Women in their first trimester of pregnancy should not take any medicine without consulting a doctor. Some medications, including over the counter and prescription drugs, can be harmful during pregnancy. Always consult with a healthcare provider before taking any medication to ensure it's safe for your baby.

Caffeine

While some caffeine is generally considered safe during pregnancy, excessive caffeine intake should be avoided, reveals Dr Deshmukh. High caffeine consumption during pregnancy has been linked to an increased risk of miscarriage. For the safety of the unborn baby, it is a good idea to limit caffeine intake to 200 milligrams (about one 12-ounce cup of coffee) per day or consult with a healthcare provider for specific recommendations. This would help manage other pregnancy symptoms!

Heavy weights

Lifting anything heavy is a No-No during pregnancy and you need to be extra cautious during the first trimester. Modify exercises, maintain proper form, and avoid heavy weightlifting. Prioritise hydration, take regular breaks and necessary precautions to protect both you and your baby. Consult your healthcare provider for personalised guidance.

These are just five things that need to be avoided during the first trimester but it is always good to follow your gynaecologist as every pregnancy is different. Your doctor can provide you with the best suggestions as per your maternal health and potential pregnancy complications. Taking care of your diet and lifestyle would only help making these nine months smooth, enjoyable and memorable.
