Allergy Solutions to Improve Air Quality in Your Home

If you are like me, there is a good chance that you live in a large city like Houston, New York, Chicago, or Miami. Obviously there are great benefits in terms of job opportunities and lots of choices in things to do. The down side for certain is the poor air quality.

Bad air quality often leads to increased allergy problems in children and adults alike. In a humid climate or a city without a lot of trees and grass, this can be even worse. It amazes me today, how many children have to receive allergy shots just so they can breathe easier and not have terrible headaches.

One area that you can control the air a bit better is inside your home. There are a few things that you can do to remove harmful particles in the air. The first thing is to get better air filters for your air conditioning system.

I find that the middle priced ones do a much better job than the basic ones in removing pathogens in the air. To me it appears that high end filters, are trying to capitalize on a society problem. I am sorry, but I am not paying $30 for a filter that I need to replace monthly.

Another great idea is to use an air purifier in your home. Some of these models can be costly, but are well worth it if you can afford them. I currently have two models that I use that I have had success with. I define success in the gunk that is removed when the filters are cleaned.

Sharper Image has the Ionizer that is very good at removing particles. It uses electricity to attract the particles to a magnetic field. The other model is any of the systems offered by Oreck. We have a few of them and absolutely love them. These models are a bit stronger as they force air through the purifying system.

The Ionizer on the other hand, is passive – or does not motor air through it. Now when you use these for the first time you will be shocked at how fast they fill up with harmful particles.

The machines will start making a crackling sound. This is a sign that it is time to change them. I would recommend that one be in the bedroom since this is an important area where we spend a lot of time.
