Did you know that an unhealthy heart can lead to fatal complications? However, if you notice these signs on time and take necessary measures you can avoid the risk. On this World Heart Day, which falls on 29 September, every year, we spoke to Dr Sameer Gupta, Senior Interventional Cardiologist, Group Director - Cardiac Cath Lab, Director Metro Group Cardiology and CTVS, Metro Hospital, Noida, who listed signs of unhealthy heart that you should not ignore.

Signs Of Unhealthy Heart

chest-pain

Chest Pain or Discomfort

One of the most common signs of an unhealthy heart is chest pain or discomfort. Dr Gupta said, “This may feel like pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain in the chest, which can radiate to the arms, neck, jaw, or back. Also, if you experience chest pain, pressure, or discomfort during exercise or physical activity, it may indicate a heart problem. This is known as exertional angina.”

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 17.9 million individuals lost their lives to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), accounting for 32% of all worldwide fatalities in 2019. Among these cases, 85% were attributed to heart attacks and strokes.

Shortness of Breath

Dr Gupta added, “If you find it difficult to breathe, especially during physical activity or while lying down, it could be a sign of heart trouble. It can be followed by suffocation or gasping for air.”

fatigue

Fatigue

Dr Gupta said, “While it is normal to be tired after a strenuous physical activity or lack of sleep, unexplained and excessive fatigue is a sign that you should not ignore. It can be accompanied by weakness, which can be a sign of heart issues.”

Rapid or Irregular Heartbeat

If you notice palpitations or a sensation that your heart is racing, skipping beats, or fluttering, do not ignore it. Irregular heartbeats, signify that your heart is not maintaining its usual rhythm for pumping blood. This may serve as a potential indicator of either heart failure or an impending heart attack.

Dizziness or Fainting

Another sign that can indicate an unhealthy heart is dizziness or fainting. Dr Gupta added, “Experiencing lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting may signal a reduction in blood flow, potentially indicating an issue with the heart. Also, a decline in blood pressure can play a role in episodes of dizziness. Rapidly standing up, in particular, may be a prevalent symptom of heart failure.”

swelling-in-legs

Swelling in Legs, Ankles, and Feet

Dr Gupta said, “Heart failure can cause fluid to accumulate in the body, leading to swelling in the extremities.” If you frequently notice swelling in your legs, ankles, and feet, do not take it lightly. The swelling in the legs and feet can result from inadequate blood circulation to the heart, indicating that blood isn't moving in the correct direction. This situation can elevate the risk of blood clot formation.

Dr Gupta informed, “Rapid and unexpected weight gain, frequently caused by retaining fluids, may be linked to heart problems. Therefore, pay attention to your weight to avoid the chances of developing heart disease.”

chronic-cough

Persistent Cough

While viral diseases like cold or flu are usual causes of cough, however, a chronic cough, especially one that produces white or pink mucus, may indicate heart failure.

Cyanosis (Blue Lips or Fingernails)

Dr Gupta said, “The bluish tint seen on the lips, fingertips, or nails can indicate poor circulation and a lack of proper oxygenation in the blood.”
