Experiencing a burning sensation in the hands and feet can be a discomforting and concerning symptom. To learn about what causes this issue, we spoke to Dr Somnath Gupta, Consultant Physician and Diabetologist, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.

"Burning sensation in the hands and feet can be peripheral neuropathy," said Dr Gupta. "Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that affects the peripheral nerves and can cause symptoms such as burning pain, tingling, or numbness in the hands and feet," he explained.

In community studies conducted in different regions of India, the prevalence of peripheral neuropathy ranged from 5 to 2400 per 10,000 population, as reported in epidemiological research, as per Annals of Indian Academy of Neurology.

What Can Be The Possible Causes Of Peripheral Neuropathy?

"It can be caused by various factors, including diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, nerve compression, certain medications, or autoimmune disorders," said Dr Gupta.

Diabetic Neuropathy

"People with diabetes may develop neuropathy, which can lead to burning pain in the extremities. High blood sugar levels and damage to blood vessels and nerves are common causes," said Dr Gupta.

Nerve Entrapment

"Compression or entrapment of nerves, such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in the hands or Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome in the feet, can cause burning pain in these areas," he added.

Raynaud's Disease

"This condition is characterised by the narrowing of blood vessels, typically in the fingers and toes, leading to reduced blood flow. It can cause burning, tingling, or numbness in the affected areas," said Dr Gupta.

Circulatory Problems

"Reduced blood flow due to conditions like Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) or blood vessel inflammation (vasculitis) can result also in a burning pain in the hands and feet," said Dr Gupta.

Infections and Inflammatory Conditions

"Certain infections, such as Lyme disease or HIV/AIDS, as well as inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, can cause burning pain in various parts of the body, including the extremities," he added.

Other Causes

Dr Gupta said that there are numerous other potential causes, including vitamin deficiencies (e.g., vitamin B12 deficiency), side effects of medications, nerve injuries, fibromyalgia, or even psychological factors, such as anxiety.

What Are The Preventive Measures?

Here are the preventive measures that may help alleviate or reduce the burning sensation:

Maintain Good Hygiene

Dr Gupta suggested keeping hands and feet clean to prevent any infections or skin conditions that may contribute to the burning sensation.

Wear Comfortable Shoes and Socks

"Opt for well-fitting shoes with adequate support and cushioning. Avoid tight footwear or high heels that can restrict blood flow and exacerbate symptoms. Choose breathable socks made of natural fibres to allow air circulation," said the doctor.

Avoid Extreme Temperatures

Dr Gupta suggested, "Protect your hands and feet from extreme hot or cold temperatures as they can worsen the burning sensation. Use gloves in cold weather and avoid exposing your hands and feet to excessive heat."

Practice Proper Foot Care

"Regularly inspect your feet for any signs of injury or infection. Keep your toenails trimmed and moisturise your feet to prevent dryness and cracks," said Dr Gupta.

Manage Underlying Medical Conditions

"If you have an underlying medical condition, such as diabetes, it's crucial to manage it effectively. Follow your healthcare provider's instructions for medication, blood sugar control, and lifestyle modifications," said the doctor.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

"Engage in regular physical activity to improve blood circulation and nerve health. Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Limit your intake of processed foods, sugary snacks, and alcohol," suggested Dr Gupta.

Manage Stress

Chronic stress can contribute to nerve-related symptoms. "Practice stress management techniques, such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, or engaging in activities that help you relax and unwind," he added.

Avoid Exposure to Toxins

"Certain toxins, such as chemicals, pesticides, or heavy metals, can contribute to nerve damage. So, take necessary precautions and follow safety guidelines when handling potentially harmful substances," he said.
