Our Nutritional Needs
Nutrition refers to the foods and substances we need to consume on a daily basis to maintain a healthy body. Nutrition has become increasingly important for many people since the USDA began its effort to determine what is good for us and what might be dangerous for us to eat. We as individuals also have a responsibility for our own nutrition, however. We need to learn how to nurture ourselves and to keep our bodies healthy and functioning at their highest levels.
We can determine our nutritional needs by becoming educated about what our individual and family needs are. We can then use that knowledge when we purchase, prepare, and consume different foods.
It is often the case that we need more in the way of vitamins and minerals than we do calories. In most cases, we choose to consume manufactured vitamins and minerals to help us fill this gap. Actions such as these represent a part of our nutritional knowledge, but gaining a comprehensive understanding of the nutrition spectrum takes time. There are so many elements in the body, and all of them are included in different quantities.
There is no really good method for determining how much of any element an individual needs to meet his or her specific nutritional needs. Currently, we only have figures related to an average consumption of an element or food, based on gender, age, and weight. This is similar to a one-size-fits-all approach.
Nutritional needs, however, represent one of the most complicated areas of knowledge in existence. There are so many variations to consider, and each person has unique individual needs. The needs of women differ from those of men, and those of older people differ from the needs of younger individuals. Human beings constantly change as they age; therefore, continuing education about nutrition is essential.
The nutrition needs of cardiac patients are different from those of healthy and active middle-aged people as well. What we need is a scale that can help us determine the nutritional needs of our bodies at a cellular level, so that as our physical condition changes, we can recalculate our needs on the basis of cell changes and the condition of our bodies.
The key to understanding nutritional needs lies in the individuality of those needs. Once we have the knowledge, we can work toward educating ourselves to fulfill these needs more effectively.
