Spending time outdoors, especially during the summer months, often leads to a suntanned skin tone. While some people embrace their tans, others may prefer to reduce or remove the effects of excessive sun exposure. If you've acquired a tan through your swimwear and are looking for natural remedies to diminish its appearance. In an interaction with OnlyMyHealth, Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, BAMS, PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar, shared some helpful tips to help you restore your skin's natural glow.

Exfoliation

Regular exfoliation is key to removing dead skin cells and promoting skin renewal. To remove tan lines caused by swimwear, gently exfoliate the affected areas using a natural scrub. You can create your own scrub at home using ingredients like sugar, lemon juice, and honey. Apply the scrub to the tan lines and massage in a circular motion for a few minutes before rinsing off. Repeat this process a couple of times a week to gradually reduce the tan.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice acts as a natural bleaching agent and can help lighten tan lines. Squeeze fresh lemon juice and apply it directly to the tanned areas using a cotton ball or your fingertips.

Dr Chaudhary recommends leaving it on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing off with lukewarm water. Lemon juice can be drying, so make sure to moisturise your skin afterward.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is renowned for its soothing and healing properties, making it an excellent remedy for tan lines. Apply pure aloe vera gel to the affected areas and leave it on for about 20 minutes before rinsing off. Aloe vera not only helps lighten the tan but also moisturises and nourishes the skin, promoting a healthy complexion.

Cucumber

Cucumber is known for its cooling and hydrating properties, making it beneficial for sun-damaged skin.

Blend or grate a cucumber and apply the pulp directly to the tanned areas. Leave it on for 15-20 minutes before rinsing off. Repeat this process regularly to help fade the tan and soothe the skin.

Yogurt and Turmeric Mask

A mixture of yoghourt and turmeric can work wonders in reducing tan lines. Yoghourt acts as a gentle exfoliant and moisturiser, while turmeric has skin-lightening properties.

Mix a tablespoon of plain yoghourt with a pinch of turmeric powder to create a paste. Apply it to the tan lines and leave it on for 15-20 minutes before rinsing off. Use this mask once or twice a week to help diminish the tan.

Tomato Paste

Tomatoes contain natural acids and antioxidants that can help lighten the skin and fade tan lines. Apply tomato paste or freshly blended tomatoes to the affected areas and leave it on for 15-20 minutes before rinsing off. Regular application can aid in reducing the tan and improving the overall complexion.

While tan lines acquired through swimwear may take time to fade completely, incorporating these natural remedies into your skincare routine can help diminish their appearance gradually.

Remember to be patient and consistent with your chosen method, and always protect your skin from excessive sun exposure by wearing sunscreen and appropriate swimwear.
