Impotence – What Is It?

Posted in Men's health by admin on the April 6th, 2009

Impotence is the consistent inability to sustain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. The term “erectile dysfunction” is often used by health care professionals to describe this disorder and to differentiate it from other problems that interfere with sexual intercourse, such as lack of sexual desire. Every man at some point in his life displays symptoms of impotence in varying degrees.

Health care professionals agree, that cases of impotence are often linked to psychological issues. No man is, in principal, impotent. However, embarrassment, fear, anxiety, ignorance and a lack of information may cause a man to feel inadequate and a non-performer. The couple may experience serious emotional reactions and difficulties which may have the unfortunate consequences of withdrawal and isolation from each other.

Causes of Impotence

The process of an erection is a series of events that occur in the body. Experts believe that factors such as fear of failure, stress, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem are directly responsible for 10 to 20 percent of impotence causes and are indirectly responsible as secondary reactions to underlying physical causes in 80% of all causes. In other words, all men have a psychological problem even if the cause is diagnosed as physical.

Treatment for Impotence

Treatment for impotence involves the restoration of a healthy emotional outlook by the patient and his partner. NO man is without sexual power and the desire to be sexually powerful. The role of treatment is firstly, to dispel any myths about impotence, secondly to educate the patient on the erection process and then to instruct the patient on how he may go about resolving his difficulties through treatment. The approach to treatment should be such that is geared towards a lifetime enjoyment of sex. Treatments that advocate immediate success and gratification – “Fast Acting”, “Miracle Drug”, “Revolutionary New Device” and the like – produce only temporary results. In addition, these methods may be extremely costly.
