Irritating Mosquitoes – How to Avoid Them Naturally
Most of you are familiar with mosquitoes and what a menace they are, particularly to good evenings spent outside. Almost everyone has had to battle with mosquitoes some time or the other. Mosquito repellents don’t work or have harmful chemicals. As a result they have lost their use.
The best way to deal with them is to avoid them by figuring out exactly what attracts mosquitoes and what does not. As they say prevention is better than cure. Make sure that you don’t allow mosquitoes to thrive around you.
One of the things that attract mosquitoes is wearing clothing that is dark. This is because these annoying insects are able to visually see dark items better from a distance than they can see lighter objects. When you’re in an area where there are sure to be mosquitoes try to wear light colored clothing.
Also as you like perfumes and sprays so does mosquitoes. So if you want to avoid them refrain from these fragrances.Mosquitoes are also attracted to perspiration and fruity and flowery smell. This does make it rather difficult to avoid them but you have to make sure that the area in which you exercise and sweat it out should be mosquito free.
Another thing that attracts the mosquitoes is open, stagnant and dirty water. You will have to do everything in your power to keep away from the mosquitoes and have little hope of succeeding if you are going to be near such open waters.
You’ll be able to find many mosquito repellents that you can use on your skin, or around you, that will keep these insects at bay. However, most of these repellents contain large amounts of chemicals that can be toxic to you. There are several other methods that you can attempt to use that naturally will keep mosquitoes near you to a minimum.
You can also try some of the age old ways of keeping these ugly mosquitoes at bay such as by using natural oils like rosemary, cedar, lemongrass, citronella, castor, peppermint, clove, and geranium oils. These natural oils work as they annoy the mosquitoes and prevent them from making you their food. You can apply a few drops of these oils to your temples, wrists, behind your knees, on your neck, and along your shoulders and let them work their magic for you.
Other natural ingredients that seem to have some affect at keeping mosquitoes to a minimum are garlic oils, the scent of cinnamon and allspice, and the oil from the pennyroyal plant. If you’re going to be using any of these natural products it’s important to keep in mind that you need to reapply them often. This is so that they remain strong smelling on your skin. Be careful that your skin doesn’t become irritated. If you do develop redness or a rash you’ll have to discontinue the use of the natural oil.
Using other products with these oils may reduce the oils natural effectiveness. For instance, if you use a sunscreen at the same time as the other products, the scent may combine with the scent you’re emitting from the natural oil. You may want to experiment a bit and find the right combination for you and your skin.
If all else fails you may have to resort to using a strong mosquito repellent that contains some chemicals. All you can do is limit the amount of time that you spend outdoors so that you’re using the repellent as little as possible.
