Changing up one’s look every now and then is full of a thrilling feeling.  But, how long can one solely rely on different haircuts and styles. It gets as boring and dull as dishwater in some time. But getting a makeover that lasts a little longer might do the trick. So, the next step one rushes to is to colour or dye your hair. Choosing the right hair colour for yourself might be a tricky one, but we often spend a considerate amount of our time to get the best choice for the prepossessing and enhanced version of ourselves as well. However, the major pitfall of not spending time to beware of the downsides that hair colour brings with themselves leads to one of the most ignorant yet harmful damage – The Hair Damage. In this article, Dr. Noopur Jain, Dermatologist and Cosmetologist, Founder- Skinzest explains major side-effects of colouring your hair.

The symptoms and damages caused due to dyeing your hair might not be visible immediately, but it does start acting up in a few days or weeks. Furthermore, dyeing or colouring your hair often can also lead to an increase in the severity of hair damage being caused.

So, here’s how tinting your hair culminate you to the degraded side for your hair:

Hair fall

The first step while coloring or bleaching your hair is to open up the cuticle of your hair. This is where the weakening of hair starts leading to hair damage and hair breakage. The moisture balance gets imbalanced due to hair colour being absorbed by the cuticle leading to a vast number of hair fall and damage problems.

Frangible hair

If you colour your hair often, it gets over-processed because of chemicals present in the dyes. The chemicals strip moisture from your tresses, separating cuticle scales and making them dry and brittle. Your hair ends up losing its shine. Thus, you will have to ultimately compromise on your length because the solution for getting rid of the damaged locks is, unfortunately, a haircut.

While dyeing your hair, we are often so engrossed with hair colouring, that we tend to forget about our skin. The dye or hair colour touching or coming in contact with your skin might seem very normal, but it can actually lead to inflammation and other severe discomforts to the skin. Also, if came in contact with the eyes, the chemicals present in dyes can cause conjunctivitis or pink eye which include redness, itching and tearing of the eyes.

Allergic reactions

One of the common ingredients found in your usual hair dyes is the paraphenylenediamine, shortly known as PPD, which is also one of the common allergy causing substances. So, with the excitement of getting a new tint to your hair, an added risk of getting an allergic reaction also gets added. It can cause itchy and scaly skin, redness and swelling in the scalp etc. It is also advised that people having skin conditions should refrain from dying their hair due to risk of allergic reactions.
