Fat Free?

Posted in WeightLoss & Dieting by admin on the May 16th, 2009

Sounds reasonable, if you eat fat you will get fat, so loading up on fat-free or low-fat foods is bound to make you less fat, right?

Wrong! Eat large amounts of fat-free or low-fat food and you will get very fat and this is one thing that seems to be happening. So, what is the skinny on low-fat food?

A few years back, the food industry jumped on the low fat bandwagon and began to produce food that they labeled as ‘low-fat’ or ‘fat-free’ in the sure knowledge that it would sell, pardon the pun, like hot cakes. And it has!

But, to make food low-fat or fat-free, they had to fortify it with sugar and salt and other chemicals to put the taste back since fat is something that gives food taste. Because of this, fat-free or low-fat food is often loaded with calories, and the calories make you fat when you eat it.

Saturated fat, the sort of fat in meat, should not represent much of your food intake and so fat-free or low-fat food is a great idea but make yourself aware of how many calories the food contains and how many calories each day you should be eating.

Better still, cut down on fat-free or low-fat food and eat a healthy diet that is naturally low in animal fat and high in fresh fruit and vegetables.

Then, not only will you not run the risk of piling on the fat, but you will be eating a simpler, better and healthier diet.
