Fasting (Nutrition)

Posted in WeightLoss & Dieting by admin on the April 27th, 2009

Fasting can be defined as a set period of time where all food and liquid (except water) is eliminated from the diet.

There is a lot of confusion around the idea and practice of fasting. In today’s society of abundance, fasting seems extreme to many. What they fail to realize though is that fasting has been around for thousands of years. References are made throughout the Bible, Koran, and many ancient medical texts from Asia to the Mediterranean. Not to mention that animals in the wild instinctively fast when ill.

Fasting can be defined as a set period of time where all food and liquid (except water) is eliminated from the diet. However today they’re various modifications to fasting, for example: juice fasting, vegetable fasting, herbal tea fasting, and the list goes on.

What they all have in common though are their numerous health benefits. Some of the conditions that fasting has shown to be beneficial for include but are not limited to are obesity, cancer, hypertension, coronary artery disease, and indigestion.

The reason why fasting is so beneficial to the body is simply because it gives your internal organs and functions a rest from the highly demanding job of digestion. Your body can then use that saved energy for healing and regeneration. In addition, while in a fasting state toxins are limited from entering the body while at the same time allowing an efficient expulsion of existing toxins.

Whether you decide to fast for one day or thirty days, it is important to follow some guidelines.

- Consult a physician before committing to a fast.
- Prior to starting your fast, gradually lighten the amount of food consumed three days before.
- During the fast get plenty of rest.
- Exercise should be kept light.
- Drink plenty of water
- Gradually come off the fast with light foods and then slowly transition to heavier foods.

It is not uncommon during a fast to get symptoms of detoxification, which include fatigue, headaches, and feeling as if you have the cold or flu. They should subside as the fast continues.

For thousands of years fasting has been used as medical therapy for numerous health problems. You cannot create a more natural way of healing. I encourage you to research further into this subject and give it a try.
