Erectile Dysfunction or What Causes Male Impotence

Does erectile dysfunction really bother you? Many men think that there is a period in their life when sexual contacts are not any more needed. They do not think like that now but when they start to experience difficulties in their sexual life this is maybe the first horrible thought that appear in their mind. Male impotence is a kind of sexual dysfunction. It is characterized by the inability to develop or maintain an erection of the penis. Like many other things in human’s life erectile dysfunction (ED) is not inevitable. It can be cure or replaced by some medical treatments. Nowadays time is so stressful, electric and uncontrollable. We might don’t understand it right now but in couple of years we can feel it on our own. Our body is weaker, our nerves are tortured and our inner life seems to be ruled by unstoppable external powers. We cannot obey them without a single try to cope with them, right?

Impotence can be of several types: arteriogenic, venogenic, neurogenic, endocrinologic (or hormonal), mixed, psychogenic.

Male impotence has various underlying causes. Some of them are cardiovascular leakage, diabetes, nerve trauma from prostatectomy surgery and so on. In fact, the caused of erectile dysfunction may be physiological or psychological. The mentioned causes are physiological and they can be treated. As you know erections is a hydraulic mechanism based upon blood entering and being retained in the penis. There are various ways in which blood entering or retaining can be impeded. When we talk about psychological impotence we understand that erection or penetration fails due to our inner condition. Our feelings or thoughts make sexual activity impossible. Specialists say that often man impotence is caused by psychological reason that physical.

Why do we want to inform you about male impotence and the fact it is curable? There are plenty of researches and examinations that show how this problem which seems to be a problem only for men really effects on you and it effect in negative way. Male impotence concerns as well men as women. It is devastating moment for people when they understand that what is naturally given to them is as easily taken. Modern practices on other hand do not allow us to make a step back and say “I don’t really care” because if you don’t, there is a person who does it. Think a little bit how crucial is this moment – when you realize that you don’t have enough strength and self-confidence. That why you must know: “where does your problem come from?” Is it a psychological problem or a physical?

How does everything work?

In few words, the physiological process of erection begins in the brain and involves the nervous and vascular systems. Neurotransmitters in the brain like epinephrine, acetylcholine, nitric oxide are some of the chemicals that initiate it. Physical or psychological stimulation (arousal) causes nerves to send messages to the vascular system, which results in significant blood flow to the penis. Two arteries in the penis supply blood to erectile tissue and the corpora cavernosa, which become engorged and expand as a result of increased blood flow and pressure. Because blood must stay in the penis to maintain rigidity, erectile tissue is enclosed by fibrous elastic sheathes (tunicae) that cinch to prevent blood from leaving the penis during erection. When stimulation ends, or following ejaculation, pressure in the penis decreases, blood is released, and the penis resumes its normal shape. In medical terms penile erection is managed by two different mechanisms. The first one is the reflex erection, which is achieved by directly touching the penile shaft. The second is the psychogenic erection, which is achieved by erotic or emotional stimuli. The former uses the peripheral nerves and the lower parts of the spinal cord, whereas the latter uses the limbic system of the brain. In both conditions an intact neural system is required for a successful and complete erection. Stimulation of penile shaft by the nervous system leads to the secretion of nitric oxide (NO), which causes the relaxation of smooth muscles of corpora cavernosa, and subsequently penile erection. Additionally, adequate levels of testosterone and an intact pituitary gland are required for the development of a healthy male erectile system. As can be understood from the mechanisms of a normal erection, impotence may develop due to hormonal deficiency, disorders of the neural system, lack of adequate penile blood supply or psychological problems. Restriction of blood flow can arise from impaired endothelial function due to the usual causes associated with coronary artery disease, but can also include causation by prolonged exposure to bright light.
