As the rainy season sets in, it brings various ear-related problems. The increased humidity and moisture in the air create a favourable environment for bacteria, viruses, and fungi, leading to ear infections. Let's delve deeper into some common ear problems people may encounter during this season and explore effective ways to protect and care for our ears. To know more about it, we spoke to Dr Manusrut, Ear, Neck, and Throat (ENT) Consultant, Yashoda Hospital, Somajiguda, Hyderabad.

Ear Infections: A Frequent Rainy Season Visitor

"Ear infections become prevalent during the rainy season due to the moisture-laden environment. The ear canal, an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and viruses, becomes susceptible to infection," said Dr Manusrut.

"Additionally, fungal infections are also quite common during this time. Those with a history of ear infections or ear surgeries are particularly vulnerable to fungal infections," he added.

Ear-Infections

"To safeguard against ear infections, avoid inserting earbuds or other foreign objects into your ears," suggested the doctor. He added that these can push bacteria and moisture deeper into the ear canal, exacerbating the problem. "Instead, use a soft cotton towel to gently clean the ear if it gets wet, and consider using a hairdryer on low heat to thoroughly dry the ear canal," he suggested.

Otitis Externa: The Swimmer's Ear

Otitis externa, commonly known as swimmer's ear, is another prevalent condition during the rainy season. "This infection affects the outer ear canal and typically results from exposure to water, be it from swimming or simply heavy rainfall. Swimmer's ear can cause significant pain and discomfort, requiring prompt attention and care," said Dr Manusrut.

"To avoid a swimmer's ear, it's advisable to use earplugs while swimming or taking a shower. After any water exposure, dry your ears thoroughly with a soft towel and tilt your head to allow excess water to drain out," he said.

Middle Ear Fluid Accumulation: The Nasal Allergy Connection

"During the rainy season, changes in the environment can trigger nasal allergies, which may lead to dysfunction of the eustachian tube," said Dr Manusrut. The eustachian tube connects the ear and throat and helps regulate pressure in the middle ear. "When this tube doesn't function properly, fluid may accumulate in the middle ear, causing symptoms, such as ear blockage, hearing loss, and cold-like symptoms," he added.

"To mitigate this issue, manage your allergies effectively through medication and avoid allergens when possible," said the doctor. He said that if you experience any ear pain, blockage, or discharge, consult an ENT doctor promptly to address the underlying cause.

Earwax Buildup: The Sticky Situation

Earwax-Buildup

"Increased humidity can soften and make earwax sticky, leading to an accumulation of wax in the ear canal. This buildup can cause discomfort and even hearing loss if left unaddressed," said Dr Manusrut.

"To prevent earwax buildup, avoid using Over-The-Counter (OTC) ear drops, as they may exacerbate the condition. Instead, consult a healthcare professional to safely remove excess earwax," he added.

Conclusion

By following these essential tips, you can protect your ears and reduce the risk of infections, blockages, and discomfort. If you experience persistent ear issues or any concerning symptoms, consult an ENT doctor for proper evaluation and treatment.
