The Plague of Obesity: Environmental or Medical?

Posted in WeightLoss & Dieting by admin on the March 2nd, 2006

Our society is incredibly image-obsessed, there’s no doubt about it. Everywhere you look there are ads for gyms, slim models in bikinis, and newfangled low-carb diet supplements. At one time or another, we’ve all (well, almost all) had to battle the bulge, even if it’s just a few pounds here and there. Today, the message is loud and clear: health professionals tell us that the obesity epidemic in this country is nearing a crisis point. We’ve been told to eat healthier, exercise more, and take responsibility for our bodies. But what about those for whom even significant lifestyle changes do not have an impact on weight?

More than five million Americans suffer from a condition known as hypothyroidism, a disease that lessens the body’s capacity to regulate metabolism. of course, eating too much does not help. But for people who have this illness, losing weight, regardless of diet or physical activity, may prove hopeless. Many with hypothyroidism actually put on a few pounds when they change their diet and physical routine for the better.

Obesity Problems

Posted in General Health by admin on the March 2nd, 2006

What are obesity problems? Medical science considers that obesity is a disease. So, it would be better for us to belief their statement. Dictionaries define obesity as excess fat in body and it is not defined as behavior. Many define obesity in concurrence to lack of physical activity and over eating. But this does not hold true as it is not a definition but some of the causes of it.

Almost every society considers obese persons are – worthless, bossy, lacks character, corrupt and lethargic so they are discriminated in almost every walk of life. And the psychological aspects of an obese person are – low self-esteem, body image disparagement, low marital satisfaction and bad eating behavior.

1. When is a child considered obese and Level Chart of Body Fat Percentages for children ages (7 to 12) and teens ages (13-19)?

For Children ( ages 6 to 12 ) and Teenagers( ages 13 to 19 ), we must define what Obesity is and when do they reach that condition. Firstly, we must understand that Obesity is defined as “ an excessive accumulation of body fat “. The total body weight is composed of Lean Body Mass (that is, water, bones, collagen and muscle) and Fat Mass. Secondly, in order to understand the present body fat status of your child or teenager, please refer to the following “ Body Fat Percentage Chart ” that I’ve prepared with information provided by Tanita Ltd., and which classifies him/her by age and gender, from ages 7 to 19, under four levels : Underfat, Healthy, Overfat or Obese.

Look for the answer in the following level chart: (more…)

Childhood Obesity 2

5. The number and size of fat Cells.
The body stores new Fat either by increasing the number of fat cells (hyperplasia), or by increasing the size of existing fat cells (hypertrophy). This is one of the most important reasons to control Childhood Obesity, since new fat cells are primarily formed during childhood. Each year of adding extra fat cells makes Adult Obesity more difficult to fight.

6. For effective, healthy and permanent weight management, understand that your Obese or Overweight Child or teen should reduce inches of body fat rather than merely lose weight.
It is important to understand the difference between weight loss and fat loss. When you lose weight, you mostly lose water and muscle but just a small amount of fat. This explains why people can lose weight but still be overweight. When they resume normal eating habits, the lost muscle tissue is replaced with even more fat. If they only lose weight, they run the risk of getting even fatter than they were before they dieted. This is known popularly as the “Yo-Yo Syndrome.” Losing inches of fat, not weight loss is the answer to successful weight management.

Fat has no calorie- burning capability. Muscle is the only tissue in the body capable of burning calories, it burns calories even when we are resting. Therefore, if our diets cause us to lose muscle, our bodies will diminish their ability to burn calories.

Childhood Obesity 3

9. Our children are not exercising, we must motivate them to do it

Contrary to what we see these days in the attitude of many adults, who enthusiastically embrace exercise as part of their daily life in order to enhance health, Our Children are now, more than ever before in history, choosing to live a sedentary life.

Statistics show that today’s children – between the ages of 2 to 12 – watch about 5 hours of television every day, and devote almost the rest of their non-sleeping time to video games and computer chat. Only one-third (1/3) of all elementary school children participate in schools’ physical education (PE) programs which have been largely reduced (and even eliminated from many schools) since the beginning of the 90’ s. These reductions in the amount of physical activity in schools have resulted in an increase of children’s bodies remaining inactive, fact which ultimately lowers their Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) – which, simply said, means their bodies’ capability to convert food into energy when resting. In other words, this inactivity results in their decreasing the amount of calories they are able to burn. Researchers have found that children not engaged in a PE program at school, gained one inch more around the waist and two pounds more in weight, mostly of fat mass, than those who were involved in a PE curriculum. Unfortunately, sedentary children are easy prey of becoming overfat or obese.

Tips on Eating Light and Healthy

Posted in WeightLoss & Dieting by admin on the March 2nd, 2006

At one time or another, half the women and a quarter of the men in this country have tried to lose weight. The ones destined to try again and again are most likely those looking for shortcuts. There are none.

The only way to step off the diet treadmill is to find some kind of program that helps you lose weight slowly and steadily; a program that will train you to adopt a low-fat eating plan, making it a way of life.

Good habits are a must. Start out strong, remembering that people who eat a healthy breakfast generally feel less hungry throughout the day. Researchers speculate that eating the major part of our daily calories early in the day allows the food to be used to produce energy; therefore fewer calories are left over to become fat. Curb your appetite by drinking a glass of water or some tea before meals.

The best diet foods are complex carbohydrates, low in fat, fast burning, and rich in vitamins and minerals. These foods are also high in bulk, which means you can feel full on fewer calories. Whole-grain cereals, rice, breads, pasta, beans, nuts, fruits, and vegetables are just a few of the things most recommended. Leave off grease, lard and fried foods.
