Red Wine Benefits

Posted in WeightLoss & Dieting by admin on the October 24th, 2009

A glass or two of red wine a day can improve vital body functions, help prevent brain disorders and fight against colds, heart disease, herpes and even cancer. Red wine may help protect against neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers from the University of Milan have discovered that neural cells will regenerate and grow when exposed to the chemical resveratrol, found in grapes, wine, various berries and peanuts. Resveratrol is known to help fight infections on the grape vine and it also appears to help the enzyme Map-kinase in the regeneration of neural tissue. In conditions such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, the degeneration of neural tissue causes physical and psychological distress.

Scientists in Spain have found that red wine, unlike spirits and beers, has a protective effect on our health even at the level of the common cold. After a year long study involving 4,000 volunteers it was discovered that those who consumed two glasses a day had 44 per cent fewer colds than teetotallers.

Alzheimer’s and Sleep

People often assume that as we get older, we need less sleep. This is true for many people, but not for everyone. Even in old age everyone has their own sleeping pattern which suits them best.

The sleep needs of an Alzheimer’s disease sufferer may or may not change, but what often happens is that their sleep cycle becomes reversed. In other words, they may sleep all day and be wide awake at night.

This isn’t a problem in itself–though it can be very distressing, and tiring for their caregivers. Especially if they become disruptive and noisy by moving around in the main living areas acting as though it is daytime.

Posted in Smoking by admin on the May 2nd, 2009

A vaccine that stops you smoking because you are no longer getting a buzz from the nicotine looks like becoming a reality say researchers. The vaccine has been developed by the Swiss biotechnology company Cytos.

How does smoking vaccine work?
The vaccine is based on a bacteriopage, a virus that attacks bacteria. The vaccine uses part of a protein that attracts an immune response to nicotine. Antibodies bind to the nicotine and it then prevents it from getting through to the brain. Without the ‘high’ that you get from the nicotine the incentive to smoke diminishes. The vaccine should make it easier makes it easier to give up tobacco.

Intelligence is something that determines the fate of people. It has made the world move and hence made our movements easier. All of us want to add on to our intelligence. It is the human nature that we do not want to work hard to get more intelligent. Instead, many people rely on certain type of food to get more intelligent. The question is whether these food and supplements actually help you become more intelligent.

Well some food stuffs contain the things that help brains grow. The fish oils that are found in fatty fish – tuna, sardines and mackerel – are the best natural source of a type of fat that is needed for normal brain development of a child during pregnancy and soon after whilst still breast feeding.
