Diabetes and Erectile Dysfunction

Diabetes with erectile dysfunction is a chronic diseases associated with aging. More than 25 million Americans may have this very serious disease. Many do not know they affected because they have not yet had symptoms. In most cases, there are no obvious feelings or signs until the blood glucose gradually increases to become high enough to cause fatigue, increased thirst and urination, blurred vision, weight loss, and eventually serious illness.

The actual cause of diabetes (the body fails to produce sufficient insulin to metabolize food properly) is not known. Excellent treatment that can control the symptoms is nowadays available. The best way to prevent diabetes and its complications is a yearly blood glucose control in persons over age 45. A simple blood test for glucose can tell if you are diabetic. The diagnosis of diabetes is made when blood glucose is greater than 126 mg/dl on two rate testing .

If your doctor tells you that you have diabetes take it seriously. You can control the serious complications, including those that lead to diabetic erectile dysfunction, if you control your weight, exercise regularly, and eat a reasonable diet. The goal is to try to keep the blood glucose level at 140 mg/dl or less. Control of blood glucose is the most important step you can take to ensure longevity, as well as regain control of your erections and eliminate diabetic impotence.

Over fifty percent of diabetic men over age 50 have diabetic erectile dysfunction at some time. Sometimes erectile dysfunction problems may even be the first sign of diabetes. It is thought that the continuous high blood glucose level affects the nerves that supply the penis and allow erection. This is usually a temporary problem and when the blood glucose becomes normal after treatment, erections can resume as before. If the blood glucose is controlled by following the proper diet and taking prescribed medications, there may no more problems with erection.

Viagra® can be used if your doctor feels it is safe for you, If you have heart disease or you have had a stroke or mini stroke then be sure you check with your doctor first. If you are taking any of the nitrate-related drugs such as nitroglycerin, you should not take Viagra® because of the danger of sudden drops in blood pressure. In this situation one of the other treatments should be tried such as herbal remedies (Veromax).
