Vision changes such as blurred vision is one of the several issues that an expectant mother may experience during pregnancy. These are a normal part of being pregnant, as vision gets back to normal after delivery.

A woman may experience blurred vision even before they know they are pregnant and even after the pregnancy. Among other visual disturbances during pregnancy include double vision, dimming, flashing lights and floaters (spots in your field of vision).

Causes

A woman may not be able to see properly when she is pregnant or may experience other vision problems. Most of the time, the reason behind this is eyes being affected by the same build-up of fluids that may give you thickened ankles or bloating. As a result of the build-up, lens and cornea thickens, only to exert pressure on the fluid within the eyeball. It could also be a symptom of pregnancy-induced hypertension; therefore, it is advised to report blurred vision to your healthcare provider.

What to do about blurred vision pregnancy

If your eyesight is getting worse, you should wear glasses, as wearing contact lenses could be uncomfortable. However, health experts recommend against any type of contact lens during pregnancy, as hormones cause drastic changes inside your body. If you consult ophthalmologist, he/she may recommend using lubricating drops, particularly when eyes become dry.

Blurred vision in pregnancy has nothing to do with prescriptions, so, you shouldn’t worry unnecessarily to get your prescription adjusted. You should consult your health care provider, but he won’t prescribe you anything unless the problem is extremely severe. Blurry vision still persists after pregnancy; hold off for a few weeks after the delivery to see vision returning to normal.

If you are thinking of having a baby, hold off for at least 6-7 months for any type of corrective surgery performed before conceiving, during pregnancy, and for six months after delivery. A corrective eye surgery during pregnancy won’t hurt your baby, but sometimes lead to over-correction, which requires another surgery later on.

When to seek medical assistance

If you notice any sort of blurring and vision issues during pregnancy persistently, you must call your practitioner. These could be a symptom of gestational diabetes or high blood pressure; therefore, it becomes important to report vision changes to your practitioner.

You can also talk to your health care provider about it beforehand. Doing this will help you understand what to expect when you experience blurred vision during pregnancy.
