Ringing in the ears, also known as tinnitus, can be a bothersome and unsettling condition. It can occur due to various reasons, including dysfunction of the ear nerve or diseases in the middle ear that affect sound conduction. But do you know that sinus infection can also cause a ringing sound in your ears? To know more about it, we spoke to Dr Manusrut, Consultant Ear, Neck, and Neck (ENT) Surgeon, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.

The Connection Between Sinus Infection and Ringing in the Ears

"A sinus infection can cause ringing in the ears when it affects the Eustachian tube, a canal that connects the middle ear to the back of the nose and throat," said Dr Manusrut.

According to a systematic review and meta-analysis, published in the JAMA Neurology, it was estimated that around 1% of individuals experience tinnitus annually. Additionally, 14% of adults reported experiencing some form of tinnitus, while 2% had a more severe form of the condition.

The doctor added that the persistent drainage of infected mucus from the sinuses to the back of the nose can result in swelling or oedema, blocking the opening of the Eustachian tube. As a result, the drainage of mucus from the middle ear is hindered, and the regulation of air pressure is affected.

"The blockage of the Eustachian tube can lead to increased pressure in the middle ear, interfering with the normal vibrations of the eardrum. This disruption in the sound conduction process can result in ringing in the ears or tinnitus," explained Dr Manusrut.

Diagnosis for Sinus-Induced Ringing in the Ears

Dr Manusrut said that a clinical examination can reveal redness and bulging of the eardrum in such cases. "To confirm the diagnosis, an audiometry test may be conducted, and in some instances, a Computerised Tomography (CT) scan might be prescribed," added the doctor.

Treatment Options for Sinus-Induced Ringing in the Ears

"The treatment for sinus-induced ringing in the ears focuses on addressing the underlying sinus infection and relieving the blockage in the Eustachian tube," said Dr Manusrut. He said that it typically involves a combination of antibiotics, nasal decongestants, steroid nasal sprays, and antihistamines. "However, it's important to note that ear drops are not effective in alleviating this condition," he cautioned.

"During the treatment period, it is advised to refrain from blowing your ears forcefully or taking flights, as these actions can further disrupt the pressure behind the eardrum and worsen the symptoms," suggested Dr Manusrut.

"In most cases, with proper medication, the symptoms of ringing in the ears subside within a couple of days. In cases where the sinus infection persists and fluid accumulates behind the eardrum, impeding its drainage, a surgical intervention called myringotomy may be required," said the doctor.

"This procedure involves making an incision in the eardrum to evacuate the fluid. To regulate pressure, a small ventilation tube, also known as a grommet, is inserted into the eardrum. Over time, typically within 6 months to one year, the grommet naturally extrudes itself," explained the doctor.

Conclusion

While ringing in the ears, or tinnitus can be a distressing condition, it is essential to understand its underlying causes to determine the appropriate treatment. A sinus infection can indeed cause ringing in the ears by affecting the Eustachian tube and interfering with the normal functioning of the middle ear. By addressing the sinus infection and relieving the blockage in the Eustachian tube, the symptoms of tinnitus can be effectively managed.

If the condition persists, surgical interventions such as myringotomy may be necessary. If you experience persistent ringing in the ears, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
