Pregnant women experience numerous symptoms during pregnancy that are dissimilar to other preggers. But apart from common symptoms, there are some mysterious symptoms that are quite unusual and may leave pregnant women baffled. Blue toilet seat is one of them. Some women report this weird occurrence(bluish stains on the toilet seat) after they use the washroom. This looks bizarre but it has a scientific explanation. We reached out to Dr Aruna Kalra, Senior Gynaecologist and Obstetrician at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram to know more about this condition in detail.

What is a blue toilet seat in pregnancy?

We all know that pregnancy can cause a number of physical changes, but one of the most unusual signs is that the toilet seats start to become blue. Although this isn’t scientifically proven, it is believed that a condition known as chromhidrosis may be responsible for this change.

Explaining Chromhidrosis, Dr Kalra shares, “Chromhidrosis affects the sweat glands and is typically recognized by coloured sweating on the face, in the underarms, or on the areola of the breasts (the area of darker skin surrounding the nipples). Sweat can be brown, black, blue, green, or yellow in colour. Lipofuscin, a pigment made in the sweat glands, is responsible for the colours. Human cells naturally contain lipofuscin, but for some reason, individuals with chromhidrosis have larger levels of lipofuscin or lipofuscin that is more oxidised than usual.”

“Although there is no established connection between chromhidrosis and pregnancy, it is possible that it happens as the body undergoes changes. The hue of the toilet seats may be changing because people with the condition's sweat may react with specific materials,” she adds.

Are there any risks of this symptom?

Considering the weirdness of this symptom, some women may get worried about potential risks, if any. According to Dr Kalra, “Using a blue toilet seat during pregnancy should not pose any specific risks. The colour of the toilet seat itself is unlikely to have any direct impact on a pregnant woman's health. However, it's essential to maintain good hygiene and cleanliness in the bathroom during pregnancy to reduce the risk of infections.”

Here are some expert recommendations to stay safe and preventive:

  • Make sure to clean the toilet seat regularly and practise proper handwashing to minimise any potential health concerns.
  • If you have specific concerns related to pregnancy or hygiene, it's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for personalised guidance.
  • Regular cleaning of the toilet seat using a non-abrasive cleaner and a soft cloth or sponge is advisable. Remember to maintain proper hygiene during pregnancy.
