Baby Massage

A baby massage is a great way to relax and soothe your baby into a wonderful night’s sleep. This is something that can be done nightly and before nap-time as well. Think about it…you know how much you love getting a massage and how comforting and calming it can be, right? Your baby is no different!

And giving a baby massage will be extra time for the two of you to bond and it will help to create a nighttime ritual that has more benefits than just getting your baby to sleep at night. It’s a great way for a mother or father to show their love for their baby so they will drift off into a night of peaceful sleep.

Before you begin your baby massage, check to see if the room temperature is at least 78 degrees. This will help your baby from getting too chilly during the massage.

It works well to give your baby massage after a warm bath or about thirty minutes after they have finished eating. You will want to undress your baby completely and set him or her on a flat (make sure it’s soft) surface. To make your child feel a little more secure, you might want to place little pillows around him or her.

There are a few different baby lines that sell chamomile or lavender scented baby lotion- which is great for soothing your little one during the baby massage. Before you apply it, put a couple of drops in between your palms and rub your hands together to get them warm.

Begin the baby massage by starting with your baby’s head and work all the way down to their toes. If you are unsure of the pressure you should use, try this: close your eyes and stroke your eyelids. Use that same light touch you do with yourself on your baby. You will want to stroke your baby’s head, nose, jaw, cheeks, neck, stomach, legs, arms and feet.

Remember to keep your touch as soft as possible and do not force your baby to stay in one position if they want to move. Allow them to roll over or move to one side and continue the massage.

While performing the baby massage remember to talk to your baby or sing them a lullaby. The sound of your voice is reassuring to your baby and it will make them feel safe and loved. This will heighten their experience and reassure them of your love and care. You will probably notice your baby’s eyes getting sleepier and sleepier before you have finished with this bedtime ritual.

If you find that your baby is not cooperating, don’t get discouraged. Instead, rock your baby to sleep and then try the baby massage another night. After awhile, your baby will come to enjoy this nightly ritual and look forward to it. But, the most important part of the baby massage will be the love you express through it. This is a wonderful way to soothe your baby before bedtime and show him or her your love.
