Women with arthritis often have several concerns when planning pregnancy. This may include if their child will inherit arthritis or impact their development. Due to the impact of arthritis on joints all over the body, pregnant women may experience pain and discomfort due to the extra weight. We spoke to our expert Dr Prasad Kulat, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Ankura Hospital, Pune, who explained how you can manage arthritis during pregnancy.

Symptoms Of Arthritis During Pregnancy

Dr Kulat listed the symptoms of arthritis during pregnancy as follows:

  • Pain and discomfort in the knees
  • Additional pressure on the spine leading to muscle spasms or numbness in the legs
  • Carrying excess water weight may result in carpal tunnel syndrome or stiffness in the hips, knees, ankles, and feet

Dr Kulat added, Fortunately, these symptoms typically subside after childbirth. Women with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), an autoimmune disease, may also encounter increased fatigue during pregnancy. 

According to Open Access Rheumatology: Research and Reviews, when describing pain, only 19% of cases indicated deterioration, while the majority (60%) showed improvement during pregnancy. However, true remission, defined as having no swollen joints and not using any medications, was observed in just 16% of cases during pregnancy.

Take Care Of Your Diet

Arthritis may result in symptoms like dry mouth and difficulty swallowing, which can hinder the intake of food. Nonetheless, ensuring adequate nutrition remains essential for individuals with arthritis as well as crucial for the development of your baby. Dr Kulat said, “While you are likely consuming prenatal supplements, it is advisable to discuss any eating challenges with your doctor.”

Engage In Physical Activities

It is recommended to maintain an exercise routine throughout pregnancy. Include exercises that promote flexibility through range-of-motion movements while also incorporating activities that help sustain muscle strength. Dr Kulat said, “Walking and swimming are particularly advantageous for individuals dealing with arthritis-related issues. Hence, seek guidance from your doctor regarding the safety of your exercise regimen concerning the well-being of your baby.”

Consult With Your Doctor

You should consult with your doctor regarding the usage of arthritis medications during pregnancy. Dr Kulat added, “It is important to disclose all the prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and dietary supplements that you are currently using. While some may be deemed safe to continue taking, others can pose a risk to your baby's health. Your doctor may consider modifying your medication or adjusting the dosage until after childbirth. Inform your doctor if you have plans to breastfeed.”

Self-Care Strategies

  • Apply hot and cold packs to your joints
  • Take frequent breaks to rest your joints
  • Elevate your feet to alleviate pressure on your knees and ankles. 
  • Do not lie on your back if you have arthritis-related back pain 
  • Prioritise getting enough sleep at night
  • Practise deep breathing or alternative relaxation methods
  • Be mindful of maintaining a good posture to prevent additional strain on your joints
  • Refrain from wearing high heels
  • Opt for comfortable shoes that offer sufficient support

Message From The Expert 

Dr Kulat emphasised, “In case arthritis causes severe pain and discomfort, it is recommended that you discuss this with your doctor before entering the labour process for appropriate preparations.”

He added, “After giving birth, some women may encounter a flare-up of arthritis within a few weeks. If you stopped taking your arthritis medication while pregnant, it is advisable to consult with your doctor regarding recommencing the treatment. It should still be possible for you to engage in exercises that enhance flexibility and strengthen muscles. It is recommended to seek your doctor's advice before attempting more demanding workouts.”
