Antioxidants

Antioxidants are in the news lately but what exactly are they and why is it important that you make sure you are eating plenty?

Antioxidants deactivate things called free radicals. Free radicals are molecules formed in the body naturally as a by-product of metabolism and as a result of modern day pollution and tobacco smoking.

Let loose, free radicals cause serious damage to structures in the body and to genetic material inside cells. The end result is ageing and often serious diseases including heart disease and cancer.

Put simply, if you eat plenty of antioxidants you lessen the risk of free radical damage and, thus, of contracting these diseases.

You can get antioxidants in supplement form but modern research is finding that maybe your body prefers you to get your supply from the food that you eat.

Antioxidants are easy to find. Eat plenty of fruit, vegetables and whole grains and look for foods that have strong colours like oranges, yellows and reds. Usually, the brighter and stronger the colour: the higher the antioxidant content!

An easy way to get them is to raid the supermarket and try to put together the most colourful looking meals that you can!

And if you drink green tea you will also be drinking antioxidants as well as enjoying a refreshing and slightly different drink.
