A recent survey of men aged between 18-65 reveals that only 37% knew that the function of the prostate is to maintain healthy sperm. The report went on to state, ‘most men knew the prostate was located in the genito-urinary tract, although some appeared to think that the prostate was part of the chest, brain or digestive system and its main function was to help regulate weight or maintain healthy skin!’

Jock itch refers to a fungal infection of the skin in the area of the groin. The skin naturally has microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi on its surface. When the right conditions apply they multiply and can cause Tinea cruris, or jock itch.

Symptoms of Jock itch include itching of the groin especially in the folds of the skin and in the anal area. A raised dry or scaly rash with sharply defined borders. The rash starts in the groin area and may spread down the inner thigh. The skin in the affected area is usually a reddish brown color or much lighter than the unaffected skin. Blisters can appear. Jock itch does not usually affect the scrotum or the penis.

Hypospadias is a male birth defect where the opening of the urinary tract is not located at the tip of the penis but opens part way up. Affecting approximately 1 in every 100 male births with varying degrees of severity, it is 20 per cent more likely to happen where another close family member has experienced the same defect.

Hypospadias is corrected surgically under a general anesthetic, the type of surgery depending on the severity of the condition. Because boys stand to urinate it is important that the urinary stream is easily controllable, lack of control due to hypospadias can lead to acute social embarrassment. This is one of the reasons that it is ideally treated in infancy, preferably between the ages of 8 to 18 months of age.

Balanitis is a rare but harmless skin disease affecting the head of the penis and/or the foreskin. More common in men over 40 it is characterized by a shiny red to orange plaque color. It can also present as a yellow hue with red pinpoint spotting.

Balanitis is only seen in uncircumcised men. It causes few symptoms there may be a bit of tenderness at the site. Most men only seek treatment because of the way their penis looks or the anxiety that there may be something more seriously wrong with it.

Circumcision is the surgical removal of the prepuce of the foreskin that covers the tip of the penis. The prepuce is a normal part of the external genitalia. It protects the the glans, from chafing and abrasion during intercourse and from general wear and tear. It protects the glans from irritation in infancy when the baby is incontinent. It provides lubrication. It also contains erogenous tissue, in other words it contributes to sexual arousal.

The United States has one of the highest rates of male circumcision at 60 per cent. This is down from the rate of 85 per cent previously recorded in the 1970s. Over 1.25 million infants are circumcised annually, that’s more than 3,300 babies each day. Male circumcision has often been carried out for reasons of hygiene. Men who have had a circumcision seem to contract urinary tract infections less. It is also thought that circumcised men have a lower rate of penile cancer, a very rare form of cancer. Research is unclear about whether circumcision reduces the risk of cervical cancer in female sexual partners.
