Erectile Dysfunction

Posted in Men's health by admin on the April 2nd, 2006

WHAT IS ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION?

Also referred to as impotence, Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the consistent inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. ED is the most common male sexual disorder, affecting almost 30 million men in the United States alone. While many men may experience occasional problems achieving an erection, ED is a persistent problem that consistently interferes with a man’s normal sexual activity. ED is a progressive disorder and will worsen without treatment of underlying causes.

ARE YOU AT RISK?

Although some men never develop Erectile dysfunction, the chance of being affected by it increases with age. ED can also become more severe as a man gets older. According to the 1987 Massachusetts Male Aging Study (MMAS) 40% of men had ED at age 40 and 67% had ED at age 70. Men with chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension and diabetes, and men with depression are at increased risk.

Reduce Your Risk

Reducing your risk of heart disease, heart attack and/ or stroke is an achievable goal. Your best plan is to combine diet, exercise and relaxation.

It helps to keep your eyes on the prize.

What is healthy heart food?

A simply way to answer this is…

Folic Acid - An Essential Part of Pregnancy Nutrition

Posted in Women's health by admin on the April 2nd, 2006

Folic acid is an important part of pregnancy nutrition. John C. Swartz, Nutritional Counselor, discusses how folic acid has been proven to help prevent neural tube defects, and how women can include sources of folic acid with their pregnancy nutrition.

Folic acid is an important part of pregnancy nutrition during the first trimester. Between days 17 to 30, four to six weeks after the first days of a womans last menstrual cycle, the formation and closure of the neural tube occurs. The neural tube will later become the spinal cord, brain, and bone surrounding the spinal cord and brain. If the fetus does not receive the proper pregnancy nutrition before and during the first trimester, neural tube defects may occur.

Neural Tube Defects: Spina Bifida and Anencephaly

Neural tube defects occur very early in pregnancy. During the first trimester, one of the ends of the neural tube will fail to close properly resulting in this type of birth defect. The two most common neural tube defects are spina bifida and anencephaly.
